POSITION SUMMARY:
Supervises attorneys and/or staff in the House Counsel business group.
This position includes handling an inventory of cases consistent with the level of management responsibilities.
This management level is only available based on business need.
SCOPE:Supervises House Counsel attorneys and/or support staff including employment decisions, performance management, compensation and reward planning, employee development and monitoring of department budget.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Handles an inventory of cases consistent with the level of management responsibilitiesHandles all aspects of the assigned cases, which includes analysis of medical records and other documents, motion practice, pleadings, depositions, including expert depositions, etc.Counsels and advises clientsMakes court appearancesConducts discovery and investigationPrepares and tries cases with moderate to severe exposure and complexity
Develops business partnership with claims customers Works towards gaining an understanding of the insurance business, and particularly the Progressive business model.
Manages staffDirects support staff in the completion of tasks. Provides leadership and management to staffHires and trains staffSets performance standards and measures for staffProvides career development to staffAccountable for overall productivity and quality of the team
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
Juris Doctorate required
Member of the Bar in jurisdiction(s) served by specific House Counsel office(s)
Significant legal experience
Management skills preferred
Thorough understanding and working knowledge of medical and other technical information
Thorough understanding and excellent working knowledge of applicable laws and rules such as evidence, civil procedure, trial practice
Ability to execute organizational strategy
Recognizes and understands the legal issues in personal injury and insurance coverage litigation
Demonstrates leadership qualities
Excellent client/claims customer skills
Ability to work independently
Maintains a diary on all files for follow up
Computer proficiency- Strong analytical skills
Excellent time management and organizational skills
Ability to multi-task and prioritize
Effective team player- Understanding of all applicable ethical duties
Attention to detail
Ability to learn new or updated computer software and programs
Ability to learn and follow existing and new processes and procedures

Traditional work hours, but will frequently require evening and/or weekend hours
